Kitchen Renovation Reston VA
From Walled-Off Workroom to the Heart of the Home
Reston was built in villages, and the kitchens follow the villages. The earliest clusters around Lake Anne, including the Goodman-designed townhomes of Hickory Cluster and Waterview, are International Style houses with walls of glass and compact galley kitchens that were never meant to be looked at. The contemporaries, cluster homes and colonials that filled in Hunters Woods, Tall Oaks, South Lakes and the streets around Lake Audubon and Lake Thoreau through the 1970s and 80s almost universally share one trait: kitchens designed as separate workrooms, walled off from the living space. Beautiful lots, smart community planning, dated interior thinking. The newer homes at North Point and the condos at Reston Town Center and along the Silver Line usually need finish upgrades rather than structural ones.
A Reston remodel is usually about connection: opening the kitchen to the main living area, putting an island where the wall stood, and choosing cabinetry, stone and lighting that agree with the house rather than fight it. The grey and white kitchen photographed on this page is a Reston project of ours, an original-layout home whose wall came out. We remodel kitchens across all of Reston, in ZIP codes 20190, 20191 and 20194.
Kitchen Remodeling Company Reston
We Handle the Load-Bearing Wall
Opening a Reston original layout usually means dealing with a load-bearing wall. That adds an engineered beam, a structural permit and inspections, and it is exactly the work many kitchen remodeling contractors avoid. Since 2009 EA Home Design has engineered, permitted and built that wall, and the kitchen behind it, across nearly 2,000 Northern Virginia remodels, work that has earned 28 design awards and four national wins, the 2026 Möbel National Award for Best Kitchen Design among them. We are a Virginia Class A contractor, license #2705157182, and fully insured.
Reston is one of our closest markets: our showroom at 44225 Mercure Circle in Sterling is about 15 minutes away by the Dulles Toll Road or Reston Parkway, and it is where Reston clients compare cabinet lines, stone and hardware after the 3D design is approved and before anything is ordered.

Kitchen Remodel Process Reston
Engineered, Permitted, Built in One Run
The first visit is free and happens at your Reston home. Our kitchen designers measure, work out which walls carry load and where the plumbing and electrical can go, and listen to how you want the room to live. A detailed 3D design follows at no cost; once you approve it, cabinetry, stone and hardware are chosen together in our Sterling showroom and the budget and schedule are locked.
Structural, electrical and plumbing changes are permitted through Fairfax County Land Development Services; we prepare the drawings, file the application and schedule every inspection. Interior work does not go to the Reston Association, but if the design touches a window or an exterior door, the Design Review Board sees it first and we prepare that submission too. Our own crew then builds it in a single run, eight to ten weeks for a remodel that opens the layout, with every cabinet and appliance on site before demolition. You begin with 30% down, as Virginia law provides.

A Real Reston Kitchen Remodel: The Wall Came Out
In a Reston original-layout home we opened the kitchen to the main living area: new cabinetry, grey quartzite surfaces, an island where a wall used to be, and a lighting plan that replaced a single ceiling fixture doing all the work. The full remodel took roughly ten weeks. The honest tradeoff: the load-bearing wall meant an engineered beam and a structural permit, which is why two similar-looking Reston remodels can land far apart on budget. Every photo on this page is that kitchen. Read the Reston kitchen remodel case study for the before and after photos.
“EA Home Design came to us with a great recommendation when we were initially thinking of a complete home remodel and they went above and beyond our expectations.” Padma Adunutula, verified EA Home Design client.
Planning first? Our open-concept versus traditional layout guide covers what removing a wall involves, our Northern Virginia kitchen remodel cost guide shows what each budget tier buys, and our kitchen remodel timeline walks through the ten weeks phase by phase.
We work throughout Reston, including Lake Anne, Hickory Cluster, Waterview, Hunters Woods, Tall Oaks, South Lakes, Lake Audubon, Lake Thoreau, Lake Newport, North Point, Reston Town Center and the neighborhoods off Reston Parkway, Wiehle Avenue and Glade Drive, and in neighboring Herndon, Great Falls, Oakton, Vienna and Sterling. The full list of towns is on our kitchen remodeling service areas page. Doing a bathroom in the same project? See bathroom remodeling in Reston.

Why can two similar Reston kitchen remodels cost so differently?
Usually the wall. Opening a Reston original layout often means removing a load-bearing wall, which adds an engineered beam, a structural permit and inspections.
Two kitchens that look alike when finished can differ substantially depending on whether that structural work was needed.
We tell you at the first consultation whether your wall is load-bearing and show the finished layout in 3D before you decide.
Does my kitchen remodel need Reston Association approval?
Interior work, including cabinetry, layout changes and wall removal, does not go through the Reston Association.
If your project changes windows, doors or anything visible from outside, the Design Review Board reviews it, and we prepare that submission for you.
Structural, electrical and plumbing permits still go through Fairfax County, which we also handle.
How long does a kitchen remodel take in Reston?
A full remodel that opens the layout typically takes eight to ten weeks of construction; our Reston project ran roughly ten.
Remodels on the existing layout usually finish in five to seven weeks.
Every cabinet and appliance is ordered before demolition so lead times do not stall the build.
Do you remodel Reston townhouses and cluster homes?
Yes. Reston’s townhouses and cluster homes have the same closed-off original kitchens as the detached homes, often with less square footage to work with.
We design for the footprint: galley and L-shaped layouts with a peninsula or a compact island, cabinetry to the ceiling for storage and a lighting plan that makes the room feel larger.
Shared walls and cluster association rules are factored into the plan from the start.
What does the free consultation include?
We visit your Reston home, measure the kitchen and talk through how you cook, entertain and store things.
You then receive a 3D design of the new kitchen at no cost, including any wall removal or island placement, so you see the result before committing to anything.
Material selections happen together in our Sterling showroom, about 15 minutes away.
Do you remodel kitchens in Reston Town Center and Silver Line condos?
Yes. Condo kitchens are their own discipline: the building approves the work, wants certificates of insurance and a schedule, sets quiet hours and elevator bookings, and often limits what can move because the plumbing stacks are shared. We handle that paperwork with your management company, design within the building’s rules, and our crews work clean and contained. Finish upgrades, cabinetry to the ceiling and a better lighting plan do most of the work in a Town Center or Wiehle-Reston East condo, because the layout usually stays.
EA Home Design is a licensed Virginia Class A contractor (#2705157182) with comprehensive insurance on every project. Our lead designer holds a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering and is an Associate Kitchen and Bath Designer (AKBD), which matters when the project involves structural changes.
