frequently
asked questions
Which paneling style is right for my room?
It follows the room’s job. Dining rooms and stairways suit classic wainscoting or picture-frame moulding; bedrooms and offices shine with a single accent wall — board and batten for crisp architecture, slat wood for warmth; powder rooms love full-height drama. At your free consultation we bring photos and sketch options directly on your walls.
How long does wall paneling installation take?
Far less than most remodeling: a single accent or feature wall typically takes one to three days, a full wainscoted room or stairway about a week. Design and any custom millwork add lead time up front, and you get the full schedule before we start. It’s one of the highest-impact, lowest-disruption projects a home can get.
Should the paneling be painted or stained wood?
Painted paneling — usually in your trim color or a deep accent shade — suits board and batten, shaker grids and wainscoting, and reads crisp and architectural. Stained or natural wood suits slat and fluted walls, bringing warmth and texture. We help you decide with samples against your room’s light, and both are finished to furniture standard.
Can you install paneling over existing drywall?
Yes — that’s the normal case. We check the walls for flatness, locate studs, and set every line by laser. Panels and battens are glued and nailed, joints filled, caulked and finished, so the result looks built with the house rather than added to it. No demolition, minimal dust.
Do you design the paneling before installing it?
Always. Proportion is everything in paneling — box sizes, batten spacing, rail heights all have to fit YOUR room’s dimensions, windows and trim. Our designers draw the wall to scale and show you renderings before anything is cut. That design-first approach is the difference between millwork and lumber on a wall.
What does wall paneling cost?
It depends on the style’s complexity, the wall or room size, and paint-grade versus stain-grade material — a single accent wall is a very different project from a full wainscoted stairway. After the free in-home consultation you get a detailed, itemized proposal, and per Virginia law you start with just 30% down with the price locked before work begins.
Which rooms benefit most from paneling?
Dining rooms, primary bedrooms (a paneled headboard wall transforms the room), home offices — especially the wall behind your desk on camera — stairways and entries, powder rooms and media walls. Anywhere the room needs a focal point that furniture alone can’t provide.
Can you match our home's existing trim and millwork?
Yes — that’s what makes paneling look original to the house. We take profiles from your existing baseboards, casings and crown, and match new work to them, or design a deliberate contrast if that’s the look. Either way it’s a decision made on purpose, drawn before it’s built.
